The Gen Z Effect: Rethinking Wellbeing Leadership

How we lead workforce integration
Gen Z Is Speaking. Are We Listening?
After sitting down on a podcast recently with the co-founder of Pupilar, Maimuna Rahid, a Next Gen LinkedIn-style platform with over 70,000 youth in its community, I learned this:
Gen Z want real talk, not lip service. For them, wellbeing isn’t a Friday perk. It’s baked into how work is led, communicated, and lived. They expect transparency from leaders, mental health to be normalised, and purpose to be more than a poster. They’re seeking two-way mentorship, not top-down direction. Leaders who are open to learning from them just as much as teaching them.
To meet this moment, we must let go of old narratives.
“Wellbeing = HR’s job” is outdated. A siloed view of wellbeing has expired. Gen Z expect it to be a shared responsibility across all leadership levels.
Likewise, "younger = less resilient” misses the point. Gen Z navigate complex realities…climate anxiety, economic instability, digital fatigue…and resilience looks different for them. They’re not fragile; they’re just done with burnout being a badge of honour.
So how do we lead systemically?
Tap into the gig mindset. Offer project variety, autonomy, and space to grow.
Create safe, non-judgmental environments where wellbeing isn’t just supported...it’s co-created.
Above all, remember: Wellbeing leadership = relational leadership. It’s not about controlling or fixing…it’s about connecting. And that’s what Gen Z is here for.
Leading Gen Z: Less Command, More Connect
If you're leading Gen Z the way you led teams a decade ago, you're already behind.
This generation doesn’t just expect wellbeing to be talked about; they expect it to be lived. They're watching what leaders do, not what they say. And they’re asking questions that cut deep:
“Why should I trust you?”
“What are you doing to create a culture where I can thrive?”
“Do you actually care about your people, or just the optics?”
Leading Gen Z well means shifting from control to curiosity. From polished leadership personas to a genuine, consistent presence.
And here’s the key: they don’t want perfect leaders. They want human ones.
Leaders who ask for feedback, admit when they’re wrong, and show up with emotional intelligence, not just executive presence.Gen Z responds to transparency, shared purpose, and autonomy. They want to know why the work matters and how they can shape it.
If you’re not creating space for conversation, growth, and co-ownership, you’ll lose them. Fast.
Practical Tip:
Swap “How do I motivate them?” for “How do I partner with them?” Kick off your next 1:1 or team meeting with one of these prompts:
“What’s one thing we could do differently to support your wellbeing here?”
“Where do you feel most energised—and where are we wasting your time?”
Then listen. Don’t fix. Build the habit of shared leadership.
