"If you create a fear-free environment, people will willingly and enthusiastically share their ideas, confident that they won’t be embarrassed or punished for doing so."

Psychological Safety Starts With You
Before we can create psychological safety for others, we must first embody it ourselves. How we regulate our own nervous system directly impacts the energy and environment we bring to our teams.
Ever noticed how when you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or on edge, those around you seem to pick up on it? That’s because our nervous systems are constantly signaling safety—or danger—to others. In our recent Mastermind session in Dubai, Charlotte walked us through The Polyvagal Theory, which explains that when we’re in our optimal zone of functioning (aka the "Window of Tolerance"), we’re calm, clear-headed, and engaged. But when stress pushes us into hyper-arousal (fight-or-flight mode) or hypo-arousal (shutdown mode), it becomes much harder to communicate effectively, make thoughtful decisions, or create a safe space for others.
So, what’s the first step? Self-awareness and regulation. When we take care of our own nervous system—through connection, breathing, movement, mindfulness, or simply recognizing our triggers—we create a ripple effect. A leader who models calm, clarity, and openness encourages the same in their team.
If we want psychological safety to thrive in our teams, we have to ask: Am I showing up in a way that signals safety or stress? Because how we show up shapes the culture we create.
Creating a Psychologically Safe Space
What makes a great team? Talent, sure. Vision, definitely. But the secret ingredient? Psychological safety. When your team feels safe to speak up, take risks, and share ideas, that’s when the magic happens.
In our February Dubai session, we went deep. We discussed that psychological safety isn’t just about creating a “nice” environment. It’s about creating a space where you can disagree well—so your team feels able to bring their ideas, thoughts and whole self to the workplace. Building this kind of trust takes consistent effort, starting with how you show up as a leader.
When people feel safe, they stop holding back. They share ideas, even if they’re half-baked. They voice concerns before they snowball into bigger issues. And they collaborate with more courage, knowing mistakes are part of growth. A safe team is a thriving team.
If you’re ready to foster a culture of trust and openness, start by asking: How safe does my team feel to speak their truth? The answer might surprise you—and it’s where the real work begins.
Practical Tip:
Try this, it’s the fastest way to shift your nervous system into a calmer state, helping you model and create psychological safety.
The Physiological Sigh
Feeling stressed before a meeting or presentation? Try the 'physiological sigh': two quick inhales through the nose, followed by a long, slow exhale through the mouth. This simple breath resets your nervous system in seconds, signaling calm to yourself and those around you. Model tranquility and watch psychological safety rise.
